Hampton Inns, Detergent Sheets, and Disney Cruise Ship Chaos: A Vacation Laundry Saga

Disney Treasure Fairytale Fresh Laundry

Let’s talk about laundry. I know, it’s the last thing you want to think about on vacation. But when you’re on the road for weeks at a time, or you simply refuse to lug around a massive suitcase of clothes, you have to plan for it. Our secret weapon? Laundry detergent sheets. Because they aren’t liquid, they’re incredibly easy to travel with, completely TSA-friendly, and take up zero space.

Why is this top of mind? Because 2026 brought us the road trip of road trips.

At 16 days, it was our longest adventure to date, involving planes, cars, trains, and ultimately, a cruise ship. We kicked things off in Montana, winding through Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, then up into Vancouver, BC, before finally boarding the Disney Magic for Alaska. (As always, I relied on my holy trinity of trip planning to pull this off: my Roadtrippers app, Google Sheets, and the internet).

Living just a short drive from Port Canaveral, we are admittedly spoiled. We’re used to throwing whatever we want into our trunk and driving right to the port without a second thought about luggage weight. But this itinerary forced a totally new perspective. Hauling luggage across five states and an international border before ever setting foot on a ship meant packing light wasn’t just a goal; it was a survival tactic. That meant laundry was a huge part of the puzzle.

During the land portion of our trip, our strategy was simple. Beyond the complimentary breakfast, Hampton Inn’s best feature is its guest laundry rooms. Just remember to bring a stash of quarters! Being able to easily run a load of clothes while mapping out the next day’s drive kept us right on track.

But then we boarded the Disney Magic, and the laundry situation took a decidedly un-magical turn.

To be fair, Disney does make the payment process incredibly easy. You don’t need to lug leftover quarters onto the ship because the machines tap right to your Key to the World card. Unfortunately, the convenience completely stops there.

If you’ve sailed on Disney’s Wish-class ships, you know their laundry rooms are fairytale like (themed accordingly), efficient, and wonderfully modern.

The OG ships, like the Magic, are a completely different story. The Magic has so few laundry facilities that washing your clothes practically becomes a competitive sport. It was a huge point of contention onboard, with passengers literally staking out the laundry room or leaving their dinner tables mid-meal just to go move their loads.

Because there are never enough dryers, things get ruthless. The bottleneck of waiting for clothes to dry led to the ultimate laundry sin: someone actually took our soaking-wet clothes out of the washer and dumped them on a table because no dryer was available.

My biggest hope is that Disney eventually retrofits their OG ships with a fleet of all-in-one washer/dryer machines to completely eliminate this “my clothes are washed but have nowhere to dry” chaos. Until then, my advice is simple: if you are sailing on a Wish-class ship, enjoy the magical laundry room. But if you’re sailing on an OG ship, pack accordingly and do whatever it takes to avoid doing laundry onboard!
