Space Coast

3... 2... 1... Let's Explore Kennedy Space Center Like a Local

I’ve been to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex more times than I can count, and if there is one universal truth I can share with you, it’s this: do not be naive enough to think you can see it all in a single day.

Depending on the crowds—and the fact that they are constantly adding incredible new exhibits—tackling KSC is a two-day mission if you want to avoid feeling rushed. But if you’re plotting out your itinerary, here is exactly how I prioritize the park to get the absolute most out of the experience.

Start with Pure Awe at Space Shuttle Atlantis

If it’s your first trip, make Atlantis your absolute first stop. Everyone has their own touring style, but the music, the buildup, and the theatrical reveal they’ve designed for this iconic orbiter has never not brought a tear to my eye.

Plan to spend at least two hours here, especially if you are traveling with kids. The exhibits are incredibly hands-on. As you make your way through the building, the kids can hit the massive slide that simulates the steep, high-speed angle of a shuttle landing (and don’t worry, if sliding isn’t your thing, you can always just walk down). After the slide, you’ll absolutely want to strap in for the Shuttle Launch Experience—it provides just enough simulation to feel authentic without being too extreme for the family. Whenever I am playing tour guide for out-of-town guests, we head to Atlantis first.

Relive History at the Apollo/Saturn V Center

Next, catch the bus out to the Saturn V Center. This is where the sheer scale of the moon landing history comes to life. Walking beneath the massive stages of the Saturn V rocket never gets old.

My son absolutely loves the firing room exhibit here—he fully intends to work in Mission Control someday, and this immersive simulation fuels that dream every single time we visit. You can grab lunch right inside the building, and if your timing is lucky, you might even score a picture-perfect view across the water of an Artemis rocket sitting on the pad preparing for launch.

Discover the Future at the Deep Space Launch Complex

Gateway is KSC’s addition dedicated to the latest and greatest in commercial spaceflight. The moment you walk in, you are greeted by a massive, flight-flown SpaceX Falcon 9 booster suspended from the ceiling.

Like Atlantis, this building is packed with hands-on tech and four distinct spaceport motion simulators. Plan to burn a good chunk of your afternoon exploring everything inside.

Make Time for the IMAX and “Behind the Gates”

Once you’ve hit the big three, the rest of the day is really up to you.

  • The IMAX Theater: We always prioritize making time for a movie, mostly because as repeat visitors, it’s a great way to experience something new. We recently caught the Blue Angels documentary. It’s a true, massive theater experience complete with a concession stand.
  • Behind the Gates Tours: If your travel budget allows, booking an add-on tour is worth every penny. You get to venture far beyond the standard bus route and see the actual working facilities of America’s spaceport up close.

A Pro-Tip for Military Families

A Quick Warning on the Weather

It wouldn’t be a true Florida travel guide without a weather warning. Check the forecast but pack a raincoat anyway. Some of the most torrential, out-of-nowhere storms I’ve ever been caught in have happened while walking back to the KSC parking lot.

Planning a Space Coast getaway can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. If you have any questions about planning your KSC days, reach out—I’m always happy to talk space and help you build the perfect itinerary!
